Meghan has kept her diagnosis private for a long time, but she is honored to finally share her story and hopefully inspire others to do the same.
The AT&T campus in Middletown has been involved with the Relay for Life for the past 25 years and I’ve been a team captain over that span, as well as coordinating the AT&T teams for the past 8-10 years. During this time, we have successfully raised between $450,000 and $500,000 to support the fight against cancer. This remarkable achievement reflects the generosity of the wonderful people at AT&T, along with their friends and families. AT&T management has also been a strong supporter, providing a tent, food, and drinks for the relay participants. Together, we have truly made a difference.
As the Executive Director and a Founder of Mary’s Place by the Sea, Michele Gannon is responsible for overseeing all facets of the organization. Michele has been at the helm of Mary’s Place since founding the organization in 2009.
Michele established the safe haven where women with all forms of cancer can go to receive integrative services during and after their medical treatment, at no cost. Her vision for the organization began when recovering from an illness in January of 2009. Michele realized how trying it can be for women to maintain their own physical and emotional health when dealing with their daily responsibilities at home and work, and wondered how much more difficult it could be when diagnosed with a life-altering disease. Michele set out to establish a place where women with cancer could find healing and respite; less than six months later, Mary’s Place by the Sea welcomed its first guest. Since that time, Mary’s Place has welcomed over 15,000 women with cancer from around the nation. All of these guests have enjoyed all accommodations, services and meals at no cost.
Since 2015, Heather has been an active volunteer with the Pt. Pleasant Beach Making Strides walk, coordinating 35-45 volunteers annually, organizing and setting up the survivor experience tent, and collaborating with ACS staff to develop engaging activities. “My dedication to cancer awareness, driven by my family’s experience with breast cancer—the loss of my grandmother in the 1980s—has been a significant motivator in my volunteer work.”
Additionally, Heather has been an active member of the Jersey Shore Alumnae Chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA) since 2002, contributing to various community service initiatives such as Beach Sweeps and donation drives for women’s shelters, elementary schools, and animal shelters across Monmouth and Ocean Counties.
Professionally, Heather has been employed at Shore Point Distributing Co. since 2013, a company that sponsors the American Cancer Socitey Jersey Shore Golf Classic, along with several other philanthropic organizations, aligning with my commitment to cancer awareness.
Outside of work and volunteering, Heather enjoys sewing and running and recently completed her first marathon at Disney World with the support of the Jersey Shore Galloway runners as well as Galloway’s Customized Training. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Washington College in Chestertown, MD.
I completed both my medical degree and Internal Medicine training at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and subsequently my Hematology/Oncology fellowship at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
As a member of the multidisciplinary team of physicians who treat hematologic malignancies, I have a unique role in being able to see patients with a diverse spectrum of both benign and malignant hematologic conditions at Rutgers Cancer Institute, Monmouth Medical Center and Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus. This collaboration provides my patients with close to home access to the most advanced, comprehensive care including cutting edge clinical trials and the resources that an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center can afford including specialized expertise in bone marrow transplantation and CAR-T cell therapy.
Working closely together, I provide my patients with an individualized treatment plan that best fits their disease and lifestyle.
I am committed to bringing exceptional care to all my patients and strive to provide the most comprehensive and up to date evidence-based care. I believe in close collaboration with other providers and utilizing all available resources to help achieve the most optimum outcomes, all while respecting my patients’ needs and wishes.
Harsh Parmar, M.D., specializes in the treatment of patients with multiple myeloma and other plasma cell disorders, such as amyloidosis and Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinemia. He chose to specialize in the care of patients with these diseases because there are no current treatment options that result in a cure, and there are opportunities to make advances in the management of these cancers. He joined John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center in 2020.
When he meets new patients, Dr. Parmar takes a caring attitude and treats them with compassion. The treatment of these cancers may extend over years as patients go into remission and then relapse. Dr. Parmar enjoys getting to know his patients, including their preferences and goals of therapy. In addition to standard therapies, he is interested in clinical trials of innovative therapies that hold promise for extending patients’ lives.
Dr. Parmar received his medical degree from Seth GS Medical College and King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India. He continued as an Internal Medicine resident at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, completed a Hematology/Oncology fellowship at the University of Connecticut Health Center, and had additional training as an Advanced Hematology Fellow at the Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Parmar is a member of the American Society of Hematology and American Society of Clinical Oncology.
